Employment: Dr. Brown has been teaching full-time in the Oregon State University College of Business since 1978. She has taught Accounting Information Systems, Advanced Cost Accounting, Principles of Accounting, Managerial Accounting, and Financial Accounting. She was an Instructor from 1978-1989 when she received her Ph.D. She became a tenure track Assistant Professor in 1989 and was promoted to Associate Professor and granted tenure in 1992. Prior to teaching Dr. Brown worked as an accountant and a bookkeeper. Since she began teaching Dr. Brown has done consulting in systems development and technology appraisal.
Education: Dr. Brown received a bachelors degree with a major in art from the University of Wisconsin in 1972, a master of science degree in accounting from the University of Oregon in 1977, and a Ph.D. in computer science from Oregon State University in 1989. She was named the outstanding Master's student while attending the University of Oregon. Dr. Brown is a member of Beta Alpha Psi, Beta Gamma Sigma, and Phi Kappa Phi.
Publications, Presentations and Research Grants and Awards: Dr. Brown has published numerous articles on accounting expert systems and other technology-related topics. Her articles have been published in both academic and practitioner journals including: Journal of Accountancy, Management Accounting, The Internal Auditor, Expert Systems Review for Business and Accounting, International Journal of Intelligent Systems in Accounting, Finance and Management, The Journal of Information Systems, Expert Systems With Applications: An International Journal, The Journal of Insurance Regulation, Benefits Quarterly, The Journal of Financial Planning, Financial Counseling and Planning, PC AI, and IEEE Software. She received a Certificate of Merit in the Lybrand Awards 1990-1991 manuscript competition for an article appearing in Management Accounting. Dr. Brown has made many national and international research presentations. She has received research grants from IBM, TIAA-CREF, The Institute of Management Accountants and others. Dr. Brown received the Oregon State University Business Advisory Council Excellence in Scholarship award for 1991-1992 and 1992-1993.
Professional Organizations and Service Awards: Dr. Brown served on the American Accounting Association Program Advisory Committee for the 1991 national meeting and was chairperson of the Artificial Intelligence/Expert Systems Section for 1993-1994. She received a Pioneer Service from the AI/ES section for her work in gaining permant section status. Dr. Brown has participated in the Oregon Society of Public Accountants as a member of the Computer Services Committee and the Benton-Linn Chapter. She received a Leadership Excellence Award for her work on the Computer Services Committee during 1989-1990 and an Outstanding Service Award for 1990-1991. She is on the Board of Directors and is the Director of Manuscripts for the Salem Area Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants. She is also a member of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence, the Association for Computing Machinery, the Computer Society of the IEEE, the Decision Sciences Institute and The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences..
Editorial: Dr. Brown serves on the Editorial Review Board for the International Journal of Intelligent Systems in Accounting, Finance and Management, the International Journal of Applied Expert Systems and has been an Associate Editor for The Journal of Information Systems. She was Guest Editor for two special issues of Expert Systems With Applications: An International Journal on "Expert Systems Applications for Accounting, Auditing, and Tax." She has made numerous research presentations at national and international conferences and has organized several conference sessions.
Community Service and Awards: Dr. Brown is Treasurer, serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee, and chairs the Management and Finance Committee of United Way of Benton County, Oregon. She received Kenneth H. Colley Memorial Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service and Dedicated Community Leadership in 1993. She received the Outstanding Volunteer Service Award in 1986 for her work as a volunteer accountant from 1982 through 1986.
