AN OVERVIEW


MISSION

The mission of the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. (NABA) is to address the professional needs which enable minorities to maximize their career potential in the accounting profession.

HISTORY

NABA was founded in December, 1969 by nine African-American Accountants in the New York area, who decided that there was a need for a professional organization of minority accounts. Their goal was to establish a national organization that dealt forthrightly and effectively with the many common problems faced by the growing number of African-American professionals in the world of accounting. The following are the founders of NABA.

MEMBERSHIP

Since the founding of NABA's first chapter in August 1970, in New York, the membership has grown to over 5,000 members in over 140 active professional and student chapters in major urban areas and at universities across the nation. NABA is divided into four regions: Central, Eastern, Southern, Western. NABA's membership is diverse and includes individual serving in accounting, auditing, finance and general management positions. Experience levels range from entrepreneurs and senior executives to staff accounts, providing a unique environment for both leadership and development.

NABA is dedicated to uniting accountings and accounting students with similar interest and ideas who are committed to professional and academic excellence. Our goals are:

STRUCTURE

The Association's governing structure is divided into two groups: The Executive Council and the National Board of Directors.

The Executive Council is comprised of the National President, four National Vice presidents, National Treasurer, National Secretary, Eight National Directors and the Immediate past National President. Council members are elected by the general membership with the execution of the National Vice presidents who are elected by their respective regions. The National Board of Directors consists of the Executives Council and the president of each professional chapter.

The National Board of Directors is supported by NABA's National Office which is located in Washington, D.C. and includes a full-time staff. The National Office staff and business affairs of the organization are managed by NABA's Executive Director.

NATIONAL AND LOCAL PROGRAMS

During its scholarship year ended March 31, 1996, NABA awarded over $300,000 in scholarships and other financial assistance to students who are preparing to enter the accounting profession.

A significant portion of NABA's programs is devoted to the development of its student component. The Association's network of 49 professional chapters is completed by over 90 of the Association's student chapters, which exist on college campuses, and in various metropolitan areas throughout the country. In addition to the programs listed above, other student member programs include a newsletter, leadership seminars, and internship referrals. In 1990, NABA's Center will be utilized to manage our current student programs and develop new programs to focus on high school and middle school students.

CAREERS IN ACCOUNTING

A panel of professionals from varying backgrounds in accounting will give insights into the type of positions in their disciplines, and describe the type of assignments and career opportunities that are available in their respective fields.

BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN CLASSROOM AND REALITY

You are leaving the world of academia and entering a totally different environment. This seminar will provide you with invaluable tips and advise on how to make your first job a very exciting and successful one.


INTERVIEWING SKILLS WORKSHOP

This workshop, presented by Fortune 100 and "Big Six" professionals, will provide participants with excellent advice and helpful techniques for developing and improving job interviewing skills. Workshops should prove very useful in obtaining valuable insights for the actual interview process.

KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL CAREER

A panel of professional from varying backgrounds in Accounting will give insight into managing the directions of your career. Find out what key factors the panelist believe will contribute to a successful career.

STRATEGIES FOR PREPARING FOR THE CPA EXAM

The CPA exam format and prerequisites are constantly changing. There are established preparation methods that have proven successful in passing the exam. Don't miss this important workshop hosted by a leading instructor in CPA review courses.

TOWN HALL MEETING

Want to know firsthand how recent graduates landed their first job and their initial work experiences? Attend the town hall meeting and discuss these and other topical issues with a panel of graduates who have made the successful transition from college to a challenging work environment.
