TEXTBOOKS: The textbooks will be used for two semesters. Understanding Financial Statements, Third Edition, Lyn M. Fraser A Survey of Accounting, Second Edition, David H. Marshall ACC230: Selected Readings, Ormiston COURSE OBJECTIVES: ACC230 is the first half of a two-semester survey course for students with no previous training in accounting. This course along with ACC240 will expose you to accounting as an information system that measures, processes and communicates financial information to a variety of internal and external users for use in making economic decisions. As students in the course, you will assume the role of both internal and external users throughout the two semesters and will learn to interpret financial information. Individual and group projects and cases will be utilized in ACC230 and 240. In addition to learning specific accounting information, you will be expected to perfect your learning, thinking, communication and teamwork skills.GRADING:

ADVISING INFORMATION:
  • 1. This class is designed to meet the needs of ASU transfer students. This class transfers to AZ. four-year institutions, but in different ways.
  • 2. This class may not satisfy the accounting requirements for any two-year degree or certificate offered through the Maricopa County Community College District.
  • 3. It is suggested that the entire accounting sequence (ACC230 and ACC240) be taken at MCC. ASU Accounting majors must take ACC250. ALL NAU and UA business majors must take ACC250.
  • 4. ACC240 should be taken next semester. ACC230/240 is one course taught over two semesters.
  • 5. Course Prerequisites: RDG101, ENG101, and MAT155 or ACC111
  • STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • 1. ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED. You may be dropped from the course once accumulated unofficial absences exceed the number of times the class meets per week.
  • 2. If you are absent it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed and obtain any necessary handouts. You are strongly advised to call a classmate and obtain any classnotes and missed information.
  • 3. Withdrawing from the course is your responsibility. If the appropriate forms are not completed and filed with the Admissions and Records Office by you, you will receive a failing grade for the course. A conference is required if you choose to drop the course after the last day for withdrawal without my signature.
  • 4. Bring a working calculator, books, course and writing materials to each class meeting.
  • 5. Preparation of all assignments is essential to the understanding of the course material. Late assignments will NOT be accepted. Assignments due at the beginning of the class will NOT be accepted during or after class. You may turn assignments in prior to class or have someone turn in your assignment if you must miss a class.
  • 6. Group work is an essential part of this class. Abscences and being unprepared will negatively impact your participation and peer evaluation grade.
